Urban Memory Project begins pilot Lower East Side program

The Urban Memory Project begins its first venture into Manhattan with a partnership at the Lower Manhattan Arts Academy (LOMA).  Co-founder Rebecca Krucoff and teacher Maria Zagoreos are leading students on an exploration of the neighborhood’s history and current issues and engaging them in the question “What is the greater good for the Lower East Side, and what should be sacrificed in its name?”  Students will document the area with photography, film and through community interviews, and will present their work in various media in May.   The project has a lot of assistance — students will be visiting the Seward Park Library branch to  watch archival film footage and to interview long-time area residents, they will be working with theater educator Nellie Perera from the Henry Street Abrons Arts Center, visiting the Museum at Eldridge Street, and meeting an urban planner and professional photographer.  Watch these posts for more information as the program unfolds!
